I just love this photograph.
It’s a big city police woman directing traffic.
Her name is Leola N. King, America’s first female traffic cop. This picture was taken in Washington D.C, 1918.
Wonder if World War I had something to do with her taking on a non traditional work role.
The photo shows her tremendous spirit and energy while on duty.
I enjoyed them many email comments I received about how great she looked in her uniform and how fit and trim she was even way in 1918.
I appreciated that as soon as I saw the photo for the first time. I am sure she had plenty to keep her busy.
More than that, I understand that King was the first of more than 30 female traffic officers hired to work in Washington, D.C.
