BALTIMORE’S POLICE COMMISSIONER says his officers were overrun by rioters last night as National Guard troops called out by Maryland’s governor arrive to keep the peace following violence that sees roving gangs attack police, torch patrol cars, and stage widespread looting.

BALTIMORE MAYOR STEPHANIE RAWLINGS-BLAKE is under intense pressure this morning to defend her response to the violence that has ripped apart her city following the funeral of Freddie Gray — a young black man who died while in police custody — particularly remarks in which she suggested those who ‘wished to destroy’ need their space, as store owners begin to clean up the damage and the National Guard patrols the streets.
