It is alarming. It worries me. Kids today are forgetting our musical heritage.
We come from a collage a musicians, styles, places of origin, race, creed, and a rhythm woven into one big picture.
Music is everyman. Young, old, boy, girl, love, hate, happy, and sad.
I spoke to a young man and his girl, we happened to strike up a conversation in a store. His girl was singing along, barely, to the Allman Brothers on the overhead music system. The song was “One way out.”
I asked the girl if she was a fan of the Allman Brothers because I am. The guy asked. “Who?”
“I said, you know the Allman Brothers, right?”
“Nope, never heard of em.” he said.
I was surprised. The girl elbowed him and said, “You do so this is one of the songs right now.”
Well, I guess that is my point and I really can’t say I know every song either.
What is FAMOUS to me may be obscure to some else.
That’s why I like Pandora. It helps me help those who will never otherwise hear Eddie Taylor, Jimmie Reed, Miles Davis, Junior Wells, Muddy Waters, Pinetop Perkins and a whole slew of other bluesmen who made music and in a sense opened the door for the bands we DO KNOW like ZZ Top, Led Zeppelin, Eric Clapton, Elvis Presley, The Rolling Stones, Eric Burdon and the Animals and so many more.
Time to make a musical discovery! This journey will take a little time since there is so much material and history to cover. If you are like me you will discover new things every time you venture out.
For instance, a lot these guys were contemporaries so they played clubs together. They also borrowed parts of each other’s songs, riffs, and beats. You will hear this the more you listen.
Later, bands like the Allman Brothers covered these tunes and rewrote major parts of the songs to fit THEIR style and playing preferences. Long live musical influence.
