1930 Martin OM-45 Deluxe VTS acoustic guitar
The 1930s were a particularly unpleasant time for many Americans. A factory worker lucky enough to have a steady job brought home $34 a month. A school teacher saw a respectable $100 a month, while a doctor or lawyer may have brought a staggering $300 home to the family. These were the fortunate ones who could count on something regular each month to keep food on the table and a roof over their heads. Everyone else held on tight and looked for heroes … on the stage, on the screen, on the radio, anywhere. Heroes were larger than life, and heroes meant hope. Some even said no one would ever be paid more than Babe Ruth in 1930. America needed heroes.
Consider that $20,000 coach-built cars with names like Rolls-Royce, Bugatti, and Duesenberg represented unattainable opulence compared to the average $500 automobile – a luxury in its own right. A movie was a 25-cent escape, a harmonica was $1, and a proper guitar was $8 or $10. If you played guitar in 1930, you may have even heard a fantastic tale about a Martin costing upwards of $225. The OM-45 Deluxe. You only heard about it, but you never saw one because there were just 11 made in 1930. Almost ninety years later, most enthusiasts will never see an original OM-45 Deluxe- there is handful believed remaining in existence today.
The OM-45 Deluxe was royalty among all guitars of the era. Roy Rogers played one – youd be hard pressed to find a bigger hero. He was larger than life to many, and his guitar drove that point home every bit as hard as the Bambino could swing a bat. The OM-45 Deluxe became the stuff of legend for almost every reason imaginable. Most importantly it was rare and it was real and it embodied every singular quality the aficionados now consider to be Martin’s “Golden Era”. Its the definitive masterpiece … period.
The 2015 “OM-45 Deluxe Authentic 1930” “ limited to 11 instruments – draws its inspiration and exacting specifications from the 1930 OM-45 Deluxe acquired at the Guernseys Instrument Auction in April 2014. Its Serial#44999. Its real and its on display today as a masterpiece among the C.F. Martin & Co Museum Collection in Nazareth, Pennsylvania. This careful recreation faithfully employs the most traditional construction techniques and materials available today with specifications rivalling the original from 1930. This instrument also benefits from Martins Authentic V.T.S. top and bracing; the heavily researched advanced aging process that most accurately reproduces the visual character – and most importantly – the sonic performance of the coveted 20’s and 30’s instruments.
A lucky few owners around the world will experience this remarkable instrument. Sadly, and once again, most enthusiasts will never see an original 2015 OM-45 Deluxe Authentic 1930 – there is only a handful in existence today.
